The Meat on the Bones

Tuesday, Dec 5th

Light bite at the 59th St. Park Lane Hotel Rose Garden restaurant/bar, which is a great spot for casual meal/drinks especially if it were summer in their outdoor area. Over to Hudson Yards which has a fantastic light decorations for the holidays. Checked out shops, restaurants, and The Shed Theater. But the highlight is The Edge, a cantilevered deck 101 stories up. Prepare to join the masses and some waiting, not to mention the $42 price tag, BUT it’s worth it.

Tips: Go at night, though day would be good too and go up to the restaurant elevator to get down if the line is long.

Fun dinner with friends Jim and Theo but food beyond forgettable at Marseille at 9th and 45th pre Madison Square Garden (go to a game there if possible) though the atmosphere was nice and not loud.

Wednesday, Dec. 6th

Hot breakfast at classic NYC “Korean” deli, this time Halo Deli on 6th and 58th.

Walked the Highline starting at 32nd and 10th starting at Hudson Yards/The Shed. Great to see all the architecture along the way. Ended at the Whitney Museum for a quick walk through of the permanent collection.

Plenty places to eat in the cool Meatpacking District, but sorta haphazardly landed at RH - pricey, but lovely and DELISH. And warm!

Get tix ahead of time for One World Trade/9/11 Museum which is a must. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge. Or hit TKTS in Times Sq for 1/2 price tix. (“Kimberly Akimbo” for me.)

Walking the Brooklyn Bridge

Walk 5th at night for the fabulous lights and windows. Saks amazing, Rock Plaza of course and Bergdorf Goodman were tops, but all festive.

Pre-theater at Bar Centrale. Small and speakeasy-ish, yet hip. The place post theater for the stars, but perfect for delish lighter, almost tapis pre-theater “supper.” Note: only takes rezzies over the phone during opening hours one week in advance. Part of the Orso/Joe Allen family. Oh and “Some Like it Hot” was a show stopper - too bad it ends Dec. 31.

Times Square of course

Thursday, Dec. 7th

A quick early morning stroll down 5th to see the windows up close with no people around.

Saks storefront

To the Met for the Women in Fashion exhibit and Degas/Manet comparative exhibit. Both fab. Tip: Separate tix for Manet/Degas not necessary, but you must register ahead for entry as crowds are large. Line moves quickly.

Met Tim at La Quadronne on E. 73rd for a MOST delightful and cozy lunch at 1:15. They don’t take reservations, but we got lucky quickly. Highly recommend esp if headed to The Frick (currently not at the Frick Mansion, but the old Whitney at 75th and Madison.) Which is also a must…permanent collection is iconic and the Barkley Hendricks exhibit is FANTASTIC.

Wandered down Madison for some shopping at Frances Valentine among other window shopping.

And off to private events at Bergdorf and dinner there afterwards. Remember their top floor restaurant.

Friday, Dec. 8th

Another not to miss is the Ed Rusche exhibit. One of the 1960’s emerging Pop artists, his work is lots of fun, but also with great depth.  Excellent.

Other tips from locals:

  • Fotografiska at 20th & Park Ave South

  • Also in the LES, if you’ve never been is a fascinating museum called the Tenement Museum ( https://www.tenement.org/) It is very very cool and many of the best galleries are now down there. I like to walk from there downtown to the Tin Building in South Street Seaport ( Jean -Georges) which has incredible dining options. https://www.tinbuilding.com/

  • Walk thru the new Moynihan Train Hall in Penn Station - it is amazing.

  • Check “Time Out” online for things going on daily that that week.
