Virgin visit to experience University of Alabama with our nephew/Crimson Tide student. So if we are going, let’s go big…SEC football Sabin’s #8 Alabama vs. #14 LSU. Big time game.
Arrived in Atlanta Friday morning and drove to Tuscaloosa, 3 hrs away. Had rented a friends apt right near campus and it was perfect. Hotels are crazy expensive and hard to get, but this was even better anyway. But beware, you may not want to rent any ol AirBnB as my SIL rented one recently and said it was terrible.
We toured Tuscaloosa by car for the afternoon and then went to SoCal at 5:30 for dinner. Good Tex Mex, but def already busy and loudish. Apparently, not many restaurants take reservations on game wkds, so this seemed a safe option. Post dinner, we went to the new hotel Alamite for a rooftop drink in the bar before taking it in. Other restaurant options to consider are at the Alamite itself, Chuck’s, etc, etc.

Long walk all around campus and Tuscaloosa - over to the main quad of tailgate tent city between the main building and the President’s house where ESPN Gameday was also being held. Over to Paul Bryant Rd, Greensboro Street, University Dr, walkway by the Tuscaloosa River. Shopped along the way at The Shirt Shop and XXX for men, and Duke’s Clothing for women as well as the Pant Shop with something for everyone before settling in at Urban Kitchen for a good lunch. Looked also at XXX Pub, (very popular) and Sweet Home Food Bar, all good options and not terribly busy, WHICH we came to realize was because all the action was down University St, aka The Strip, which was packed and wide slam open. Def need to experience it, but a walk through was plenty.
SAE tailgate, DKE band party with Lonco country band (someone’s 50th birthday arranged that!) and off to the stadium for the 6:30 game. It is a spectacle and high energy no doubt. 100k fans. Fantastic game with the Tide coming out on top. Our Stub Hub seats worked out well, though high, were great 50 yd line views. Learned all the fight songs and first down “Roll Tide” and then left just before the end to avoid the crowds and walked home. We were tame, but it can go long and strong in the suites and all over town for sure.

Daylight savings change and a relaxed morning made us have to wait in lines for breakfast. Our non strip strategy didn’t work thins time and 30 min waits were the normal. Waited it out at The River down by the river. Great space and worth the wait if you have the time. Short and sweet and could be part of a much larger AL trip, but for our purposes to visit our nephew, it was an ideal wkd.
